Cannot login to Fedora discussion portal with the newly created account

My friend was complaining about not being able to log in to Fedora Discussion portal (to post a question) despite successfully creating a new Fedora account. So, I tested this.

I created a separate Fedora account using a separate email ID. The registration was successful.
And I can even successfully login at https://accounts.fedoraproject.org/

But, to post a question in Fedora discussion, you need to navigate to the following URL and click on the ‘Log in’ button on top right.

https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/

But, the log in attempt fails with “Authentication failure” message at the following URL with some ipsilon transaction ID. Sample URL and Screenshot below

https://id.fedoraproject.org/login/gssapi/negotiate?ipsilon_transaction_id=8c807c3c-4178-46ea-b5b6-b6d8d0d9cac2

Tried resetting the password twice. No luck.

I use Firefox. But, same behaviour (Authentication failure) on Chrome and Edge browsers.

The issue happens on both Fedora (WS 42) and MS Windows OS’s.

Can you provide the account name so I can look in logs?

I wonder if there’s not some caching going on where if you try immediately after account creation it doesn’t see the account yet.

Does the problem persist today?

I had the exact same problem from Sep. 4th (when I created my account) until yesterday. I think there might have been a problem with the authentication process. I also tried everything to log in to this forum without success and yesterday all of a sudden it just worked.

Hi Kevin

The username is: mzkraljic82

I just tried to login again.

In my first attempt, I got some Gateway timeout error (I don’t have the screenshot)

On my second attempt, I got the following error

And URL has some transaction ID like below

https://id.fedoraproject.org/openidc/Continue?ipsilon_transaction_id=9f3acfaf-b318-481a-a7be-b3f3f50392b9

From my third attempt onward, when I click on the ‘Log in’ button, I get a ‘Sign up’ page like below !! But, I don’t want to Sign up, I want to Log in

Funnily enough, when I click on ‘Sign up’ button, I get logged in, but I am taken to the below page. But, from here, I cannot post any questions on Fedora discussion portal.

I think you can easily reproduce all these. Try signing up for a new account using a separate email.

I know this sounds like a “turn it off and on again” answer, but have you tried clearing cookies?

I only have one account, but a few times in the last couple of weeks I’ve had weird login issues that were resolved by clearing cookies for the domain.

I finally managed to log in using the below weird workaround

Step1. Clear the cookies in Firefox

Step2. Click on the ‘Log in’ button. And I got a ‘Sign up’ page like below (as mentioned above).

Just go ahead and click on ‘Sign up’ button, and you actually get logged in (not redirected to a Sign up page) !! Now, you are really logged in whereby you are able to post threads

I know. Its weird.
Another weird thing I noticed. The log out button does not actually work. To really log out, I had to clear cookies again

Thanks PG ! Thanks everyone !

Sorry for the slow reply here… got busy. ;(

Yeah, it’s I think expected to see a signup page there, because it’s creating a new discourse account based on your fedora account system auth/login.

I’m not sure at all what the bad requests are there.

Do you no longer see them at all now? or they still happen from time to time?

I had the same problem. I created a Bugzilla Account and later on created an account here.
It always redirected me to account.fedoraprojekt.org and wouldn’t let me login here in the forum. The only solution was to wait, since I’m now able to login here.

Maybe the services are not syncing?

Well, to clarify, those are 3 different accounts, just authentication/login to them all is via the fedoraproject account.

ie, you make a accounts.fedoraproject.org account, which then allows you to login to bugzilla.redhat.com and here, and the first time you do it will create that ‘local’ account. If you already have an account in say bugzilla (you can create one directly), it will just log you into that account.

So, any syncing that happens happens when you login to those services, there’s nothing syncing anything beyond that.

Hopefully that makes sense…

Okay thanks! Then it should have nothing to do with Bugzilla since I directly created an account there.
The problem here was that I created a Fedora Account on accounts.fedoraproject.org and couldn’t login here in the forum. It just redirected me to my fedora accounts page instead of letting me create a local account in here the forum.
After a week or so, I now works.

Thanks for the tip! I’ve been unable to log in to fedoraproject.org for at least a week and a half now. I hadn’t tried logging in for a months prior to that, so I can’t confirm if it was working back then.

Rather than clearing cookies, I can now log in successfully using private browsing mode in both Firefox and Chromium!

In my view, this points to a clear issue with Fedora’s backend authentication system.

Yeah, very strange because there shouldn’t be any delay there. As soon as the account exists you should be able to use it to login. ;(

It could… but it’s pretty difficult to track down, since it doesn’t seem to happen to everyone, only a small number of folks.

If private window browsing works for you, it must mean you have a cookie or local storage item thats causing problems. :frowning:

I experienced this with my brand new account today/yesterday as well. I was able to create an account at accounts.fedoraproject.org without issues and log in there, but i couldn’t use the account to login to this forum or Libravatar on any of the devices and browsers i tested, the errors were the same “Authentication failure”. I also reset my password between tries just in case, even though the error was different when the credentials were actually bad.

I contacted an admin and was able to log in to this forum and Libravatar after that. On the first try i received a different error, “System error”, but the second try went through. I didn’t pry into what was done to fix it, i’ll just document my side of things here and confirm it worked for me.

The same thing just happened to me. I created my Fedora account about a week ago, but constantly got “Authentication Failed” and “Authorization Error” every time I tried logging in. It just started working as of today. Any reason why this is happening?
