The nvidia drivers provide wrappers and objects. When the nvidia drivers are updated or when the kernel driver interface changes, I think that the akmod-nvidia package builds and installs a new kmod-nvidia package. The shell prompt from ‘dnf update’ comes back (or ‘dnfdragora’ might show that it is finished (dnfdragora hasn’t worked for me for a few Fedora releases)), but the compiles to rebuild kmod-nvidia are still running. I usually run ‘top’ before rebooting to check that the system has finished whatever it needs to do.
