Hello
Can a bazzite be installed next to a Silverblue? Will boot loader going to recognize it?
I am thinking to use Bazzite just for steam gaming and fedora for everything else.
I already tried installing: moved a partition to free up some space, but when installing bazzite and choosing automatic partitioning it is showing error.
P.S. Windows also are present
Since Bazzite is a custom Fedora Atomic image, it should be possible to have it as a separate deployment and select it from the GRUB menu. If you are currently using Fedora Silverblue, you should rebase to Bazzite instead of trying to install it from the ISO image. I would recommend pinning your current Fedora Silverblue deployment before rebasing so you can rollback or select it from the GRUB menu.
I’m not sure about Windows, but if you already dual boot with Fedora Silverblue, deploying Bazzite shouldn’t affect it.
I never did rebase before, but it seems that it adds new operating system, but keeps all the programs. I remember steam messing up wine and mono to its liking . I would like steam to be isolated and most probably rebasing will be keeping steam with other flatpaks that I currently have and it will be available also from fedora (If I install it in Bazzite)?
P.S. also I already downloaded 9GB iso : D
Rebasing will add another customized deployment (Bazzite) of the same operating system you already using (Fedora Silverblue). Your flatpaks and flatpak remotes will not be changed during the rebase process. Once rebased, you can optionally install Bazzite’s default flatpaks.
I would suggest taking a look at the Bazzite docs, namely Bazzite – The next generation of Linux gaming, if you haven’t already.
So if I install steam in deployed Bazzite it will be aviable in silverblue too, yes?
Dual-booting is only supported on separate drives with Bazzite and most atomics, I believe: Dual Boot Preliminary and Post-Installation Setup Guide - Bazzite Documentation
Bazzite (Gnome bazzite?) is different enough from Silverblue that simply pinning one and booting back and forth constantly could be tricky (dotfiles in home folder are different, etc).
The happy path is two drives if you must dual-boot, or why not simply do “everything else” on Bazzite too? It’s not like you can’t get work done on it. It’s just a custom Fedora image
Thank you for an answer. I will try to install it on a drive with windows, then.
I want to keep Silverblue secure and clean: I could uninstall all layered packages, use fedora’s open source nvidia drivers - Silverblue for online shopping, writing, work stuff, music, media etc. and with bazzite heavy stuff: games, photos, video, 3D, rendering and not to care if something will go wrong while messing with it : D
P.S. because it seems to me most serious problems on fedora are graphic drivers related.
So, I installed Bazzite on windows disk - now on my computer live 3 OS’es. The games that I play on steam (the finals and marvel rivals) are a little laggy. The finals game with EAC crashing my audient id14 audio interface just like on windows11. That is just terrible : D
If you would like to use bazite also like a desktop PC do not install it with steam gaming mode. On my razer laptop it laggs most probably because hardware is not supported and it would be useful only if you would like to use your pc just for gaming.
I am a little disappointed - I thought steam on Linux had improved, but not so much at all compared to when I tried it last and it was few years ago. Actually, I would prefer steam to be installed as a flatpak - I do not trust steam. That is why I buy games only on GOG and play them if they are windows games on bottles : D
P.S. Next OS on a list to try MANJARO with KDE : )
