Not that we necessarily should, but could those topics also have calendars as their first post and, if they did, would the calendars auto update if someone put the <SUBJECT>\n[date=... time=...]\n text in the announcement email?

Yes, I think that would work, as long as it followed the Discourse date code format. Interesting idea!
