Hello. I am posting this because I am a freelance digital artist and I am really struggling with the new Fedora 44 update. My brother is the one who set up this PC with Fedora and an AMD card for me, but he says he does not know how to fix the new update and he refuses to help me anymore. Now I am left on my own to handle these technical problems even though I am not a techie and I find tinkering with code very stressful.
I have ADHD and comorbid Anxiety Disorder. Dealing with these computer issues while trying to finish my commissions is overwhelming. I rely on Clip Studio Paint to make my living. Bottles is my primary way of working and Lutris is my second option when things break. Before the update everything worked fine. Now it is broken in both.
My main setup in Bottles is completely down. The app just crashes immediately. I managed to get a log of the crash and it shows this error:
wl_subsurface#50: error 0: wl_subsurface::place_above: wl_surface@82 is not a valid parent or sibling err:waylanddrv:wayland_read_events_thread Failed to read events from the compositor, terminating process
My second option in Lutris is also broken. The launcher is just a white screen because of a webview error. Even if I get the paint program to open I cannot click any of the menus like File or Edit. It is like my mouse clicks are not hitting the app.
I do not know what all of this means but it seems like Fedora 44 is not letting my paint app draw windows or menus correctly. I dropped out of college to focus on my art career and I do not have the time for debugging Linux servers. I feel forced to take care of my own PC even though I am already suffering and I just want to work on my commissions.
Please consider making it easier for artists to keep using their tools. I do not want to leave Fedora but I cannot work like this.
Thanks.
Tenshi
UPDATE:
Thank you all for the help! This is my first time going here, you guys are the best!
We are unable to offer a level of support that guarantees your income.
You may need to take out a service contract with an IT technician or consider the Apple ecosystem, or an Adobe suite, although these obviously come with higher costs.
We are happy to help you in regard to specific questions.
I hate to make this recommendation, but: If you are relying on CSP to make a living, and you find dealing with tech issues to be overwhelming, then you should not use Linux - especially not while relying on compatibility tools like Bottles and Lutris for your livelihood. Installing Windows will take like 15 minutes and then you can focus on your work - this is the surest and least stressful way to resolve this, by far.
If you’re willing to try random troubleshooting, then I would second Leigh’s suggestion. Or alternatively, try a different distro, like Ubuntu, and see if that happens to fix it.
I’m assuming you’re already familiar with Krita as an alternative to CSP and it doesn’t suit your needs. If not, I would try it and see if it’s good enough for what you need.
Thank you, MatH. I appreciate the help. I am going to try installing Cinnamon since it uses X11 and should fix the bugs in Clip Studio Paint and Lutris.
Just to be 100% sure before I start, this won’t delete my current art files or work folders, right? I am on my own fixing this and I am a bit nervous about losing my freelance work. Once it is installed, do I just select ‘Cinnamon’ at the login screen to get away from the Wayland bugs?"
Thanks, Leigh. I am going to try installing the Cinnamon desktop environment first and see if I can just select it from the gear icon on the GDM login screen. If it gives me trouble or the icon is missing, I’ll ask for the steps to switch over to LightDM. I’m trying to keep it as simple as possible so I can get back to my commissions. Appreciate the tip!
