Both screens become unresponsive while audio is still playing; only a hard reboot helps

Hello! Recently, I installed Fedora 43 on my PC and constantly face a problem where the system randomly becomes unresponsive. About once per day, when I’m working (Chromium, Spotify, Zed, Telegram, Node.js, Konsole), both of my monitors freeze on one frame and do not recover until a hard reboot. Audio still works, and I can control playback from my headset. Ctrl+Alt+F3 does not work. Alt+PrtSc+B did not work by default, but after enabling SysRq in the kernel config that shortcut reboots my PC.
This is very unlikely to be a hardware problem because when I run Windows 11 on the same PC I can play heavy games for hours without any problems; the temperatures are always fine too.
I also checked a bunch of posts on this forum and Reddit, but they either have no solution, were fixed by system updates or are unrelated due to hardware differences (people reported issues with AMD GPUs while I’m on NVIDIA).
NVIDIA driver 580.105.08 is installed from the RPM repo that Fedora provides by default.

On this boot, the system became unresponsive around 12:26:30. After ~30 seconds I pressed Alt+PrtSc+R and Alt+PrtSc+E; after this the PC restarted. Output from sudo journalctl --boot:

Errors containing “EGLContext. Decorations” and “RTP packet” are likely unrelated to this problem.

Crash happened again while was on a Discord call; this time I connected from my laptop through SSH and collected the logs while the system was still online.

Don’t have a solution but just wanted to say that this started to happen for me as well about a week ago. Sometimes the screens just freeze, sometimes it’s a black screen. Audio and mic are still working.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Ran Memtest86 for four passes with no errors
  • Cleaned the whole PC, though temperatures were fine
  • Cleared CMOS
  • Completely uninstalled the NVIDIA driver and installed it again

Nothing helped; the problem still occurs.
Besides monitors freezing, the system also has problems with shutting down and suspending. I collected logs from attempts to shut down the system when the monitors were disabled, but the fans kept spinning even after 10 minutes of waiting. I had to shut down by holding the power button.

[15709.818912] ---[ end trace 0000000000000000 ]---

I downgraded the kernel to 6.17 and had no freeze yesterday. Maybe a coincidence, though.

Downgraded to 6.17.??
Your inxi output indicated 6.17.8 and there is a newer kernel 6.17.9 that has already been released.

I didn’t share the logs, that was maybe another user. And I don’t remember what kernel I changed to exactly. It was probably 6.17.8 then, if 6.17.9 is already widely available. I just selected the previous kernel version in my boot screen.

Understood. the posted info was from the OP @itstpm and you hijacked his thread with your post. Please open your own thread with details about your system. Hijacking tends to disrupt the conversation and to cause confusion about who sees what and what may work for who?

I was confused because it appeared that a potential solution may have been indicated because you did not indicate that you had a similar problem to that of the OP.

Okay, I am very sorry for chiming in and saying that I seem to have the exact same problem as him. I figured that opening a new thread for something that seems to be exactly what the OP had would just introduce noise.
And from what I can see, the kernel downgrade fixed it for me so maybe it may help OP, as well.

As noted, I was confused since your post was several post deep into the issue.
Also this

is not correct.
Your post to which I responded says

and does not say anything about the same problem. Once I was able to identify that you were not the OP then it became apparent what you meant, but it was not clear from that post. Lack of context leads to confusion.

‘Noise’ with a similar issue but another thread is quite acceptable since the discussion is focused on only one user and machine in each topic. Those reading both would quickly identify the similarities and the problem may not be identical so it seems best to keep the discussions separate.

Almost certainly some of the hardware will be different.

In any case, this is off topic so we need to focus on the problem presented by the OP.

Seems like you missed my first post.
