Boot USB hangs after grub menu

Dear Fedora Community,

I tried to upgrade my system from 43 to 44, but my EFI partition ran out of space during the process and I ended up without a bootloader. “No problem,” I thought, “I’ll just boot to an install USB and fix it from there.”

Turns out I can’t boot Fedora’s live installer USBs images. The grub menu loads, but no matter which option I select, once grub disappears the system freezes.

So far this has reproduced with these versions of the live USB:

  • Fedora 44 LXQT Spin
  • Fedora 44 KDE Workstation
  • Fedora 43 KDE Workstation
  • Kinoite 44

All of these were written from a working linux machine using Fedora’s mediawriter with a sudo sync; sudo eject /dev/sdd afterwards for good measure. I’ve used multiple known-good USB sticks to rule out bad flash.

I’ve tried following kernel parameter changes (done using grub’s edit mode) with no effect:

  • replacing quiet rhgb with loglevel=7 logo.nologo earlyprintk=vga,keep
  • nokaslr in case it was a cursed memory address
  • selinux=0 just to rule it out

A friend suggested I try console=ttyS0 and using a null modem to see if the kernel prints anything that way, but this motherboard ( TRX40 AORUS MASTER) doesn’t have any accessible serial or uart ports that I can find.

I also tried the following BIOS changes, all without any effect:

  • reflashing firmware to a different version
  • restoring factory defaults
  • disable/enable secure boot
  • disable/enable legacy boot
  • disable/enable IOMMU
  • disable/enable XMP

All extra hard drives and USB peripherals other than the keyboard have been physically removed.

The furthest I ever get is the "Booting " message after the grub menu disappears, seen here on one of my attempts with an altered command line:

Fortunately, the old Fedora Linux (0-rescue-<machineid>) 35 (Workstation Edition) vmlinuz, left over in /boot from when this machine was first built, still boots as far as the recovery console. I used it to generate the fpaste output below.

The 2026.07.01 archlinux installer ISO boots right up without a problem (uname -r: 7.0.14-arch1-1) and I can use that to enter my broken fedora install using arch-chroot, but trying to run fpaste from there freezes the system. Trying to run dmesg -w & strace fpaste --sysinfo --printonly to figure out why that happens freezes in the middle of a line of output (before it would’ve shown whatever the problem actually was).

I’ve got Memtest86+ running as I write this (15% and no errors so far) because I am entirely out of ideas.

Are you sure it was the EFI partition on disk that ran out of space, and not the EFI NVRAM?

On a normal Fedora installation, updates and upgrades should not increase the amount of data stored on the EFI partition.

Yes. When I was initially trying to recover it, I booted via arch-chroot and df -h /boot/efi was at 100%. For reasons that I never adequately diagnosed, dracut had been writing vmlinuz images to the efi partition. Deleting those by hand and redoing dracut, kernel-install, and grub-mkconfig put them in /boot where they’re supposed to be so… stuck config I guess? At that point I was able to dnf reinstall grub2-efi-'*' to get the grub menu to appear as normal.

Back to the original question anyway! I’m sorry, I can’t think of any diagnostic steps you haven’t already tried.

Let’s see if others have ideas.

An important detail may have been in the part of fpaste i cut out for brevity:

Even though I followed the guide and did a full dnf upgrade on fc43 before trying to do the release version upgrade, the “can’t install kernels because EFI is full” seems to have been going on long enough that my most recent successful Fedora boot was on kernel 6.12.15.

The oldest kernel package available for fc44 is 6.19.8, so I booted to my chroot and tried installing that instead of 7.xxx. Sadly, that didn’t work either.

Using archived ISOs, I find I can boot fc40 and fc41, but not fc42. fc42 fails with a different symptom than 43 and 44 – the latter just hang at the screenshot in my original post (the cursor at the bottom doesn’t even flash). 42 prints the customary IOMMU error dmesg entries and then stops with the cursor at the bottom still flashing.

But, in the meantime, I’ve now got my system working in perhaps the craziest way possible: I copied Arch’s kernel off the arch installer iso into /boot, copied its /var/lib/modules entry onto my hard drive, ran kernel-install -v add 7.0.14-arch1-1 /usr/lib/modules/7.0.14-arch1-1/vmlinuz from the chroot to generate a grub entry for it, and now I can boot “Fedora 44” with the arch kernel underneath. No selinux support, naturally, but it’s a usable system otherwise.

I can live with this hack for now, but would like to get back to a real Fedora kernel if possible, so this thread remains unresolved. I’m happy to test any other configuration someone may suggest.

Please post the output of “inxi -Fzxx” as pre-formatted text so we can see what hardware you have. You may have to install inxi with “sudo dnf install inxi” first.
