Blackscreen after upgrade to 6.18.10-200

Hey yall.

Pretty new to this, as I have literally just made an account for this issue, so apologies in advance if this has been solved before.

Basically, after updating to 6.18.10, my PC gets a black screen with only the cursor. SDDM works fine, and the issue happens after i log in.

Kernel 6.18.10-200.fc43.x86_64 on x86_64 (tty4)

So, while i do know the at my issue is with my Driver, I cant for the love of me figure out why it breaks.

From what i understand while the driver does exist in my PC but it doesn’t install.

if i do

sudo ls -1 /var/cache/akmods/nvidia

At this point i am not really sure how to proceed. Any help would be much appreciated

Please install and post the output of inxi -Fzxx (as preformatted text please - otherwise the output is a mess and much harder to read - use the </> above).

I assume you’re expecting to be using the rpmfusion nvidia drivers and not falling back to nouveau.

Please also post the output of mokutil --sb-state

Paste please the end of the corresponding log.

  • tail -30 /var/cache/akmods/nvidia/580.119.02-1-for-6.18.10-200.fc43.x86_64.log

and also:

  • rpm -qi kmod-nvidia-6.18.10-200.fc43.x86_64-580.119.02-1.fc43.x86_64.rpm

Do that before trying to fix with sudo akmods

This is weird, if akmods had failed, the log should end with failed.log

And also:

ls -l /lib/modules/6.18.10-200.fc43.x86_64/modules.dep*
ls -l /lib/modules/6.18.10-200.fc43.x86_64/extra/nvidia

I suspect that depmod had failed in the postinstall of the kmod rpm.

This is every log that was requested by you guys.

The issue has been resolved, i went into the virtual terminal and updated to kernel 6.18.12.200 and everything seems to work.

I did however post the logs above in case anyone wanted to peep at them.

Thanks for the assistance

Note, for someone trying to use rpm in the future to look at a local disk rpm file, that would have to be ( add the “p” option flag):

  • rpm -qip kmod-nvidia-6.18.10-200.fc43.x86_64-580.119.02-1.fc43.x86_64.rpm

and done in the same directory as the rpm (/var/cache/akmods/nvidia ) or use the full path to the file

You are right: my command was wrong. I wanted in fact a rpm -qi of the installed kmod,
to know in particular its Install Date (without playing with --qf). It should have be:

  • rpm -qi kmod-nvidia-6.18.10-200.fc43.x86_64

Not quite sorry. In particular the end of the log is partial.

Never mind, I’m pretty sure that the depmod done in the postinstall of the kmod rpm
was killed by a reboot (one have seen that). In this case. the akmods command fails to
detect that and does nothing. The akmods.service called at next boot does thus nothing
as well.

The fix in this case is to force a rebuild with: sudo akmods --force --rebuild

In this case, wouldn’t sudo depmod -a suffice? The nvidia kernel modules were successfully built in the previous step.

Yes.

You may want also to do that for the previous kernel, with:

  • sudo depmod -a PREVIOUS_KERNEL

(or sudo akmods --force --rebuild --kernels PREVIOUS_KERNEL)

Eventually for all the installed kernels.
