Black Screen on F44 Live USB with old Nvidia

Yes, I know. Another Nvidia black screen post. Sorry.

I have an old system with the following GPU. This was captured when I booted the live install and selected basic graphics mode.

I tried to boot a F44 Live USB today and after the screen where you select boot, verify USB or troubleshoot when I try to boot I just get a completely black screen forever. I can’t get an alternate TTY to come up either. What does work is selecting troubleshooting and booting with basic graphics. I tried both Cinnamon and Gnome live USBs, with and without Ventoy.

Shouldn’t nouveau work with this old GPU to at least display some basic graphics in order to install? It’s not a huge deal for me, but would be an unfortunate situation for a new user trying out Fedora 44. I’ve already got Cinnamon installed on this system with the 470 RPM Fusion driver running X11 since this Nvidia doesn’t support Wayland so I know it works.

Does it have a second video card or video output? For instance, it is has an intel built-in, then they added the second GPU? Usually you get that error, IF it picks a different video card.

The CPU does apparently have Intel HD Graphics 4000 built in, but I don’t use it or have a monitor hooked up to it. This is a desktop, not a laptop with hybrid graphics. In the system BIOS, I found a graphics setting and it was set to Auto. I changed it to specifically use the PCIe video card which should hopefully prevent it from trying to use the iGPU but that didn’t help. In the inxi output, it only lists the Nvidia card. Here is the full inxi:

I see 2 problems there.

  1. The desktop is X11. F44 does not support x11 on either kde or workstation editions.
  2. The only GPU shown is GTX 680, which I believe is old enough that only the legacy driver 470xx will support it and the 470 driver does not support wayland. Nvidia ended support for the Kepler series of GPUs in 2021 and the 470 driver was the latest version that supported that chipset.

What edition of fedora is installed or being installed? There are some spins that do support x11 and would work with the 470xx driver.

Installing with basic graphics and then installing the nvidia drivers after installation is very common for many nvidia GPUs.

Is that the latest bios for the motherboard? I had that issue once. The intel driver wouldn’t completely shut off, and I had to switch cables. What I don’t recall is if updating the bios fixed the issue or not.

If you look at the log. It is still showing up as
Device-1: NVIDIA GK104
i would expect this to be Device-0: after the intel being disabled in bios so I don’t think it is fully being disabled.

no but the Nouveau driver does support wayland for his card.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/65523/intel-core-i73770k-processor-8m-cache-up-to-3-90-ghz/specifications.html has a footnote:

‡ This feature may not be available on all computing systems. Please check with the system vendor to determine if your system delivers this feature, or reference the system specifications (motherboard, processor, chipset, power supply, HDD, graphics controller, memory, BIOS, drivers, virtual machine monitor-VMM, platform software, and/or operating system) for feature compatibility. Functionality, performance, and other benefits of this feature may vary depending on system configuration.

Does the system have more than one connector for displays?

Yes, it should. But I find that nouveau reliability is very “hit and miss” across kernel versions. Out of curiosity, could you try with a F44 Workstation respin ISO? https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/live-respins/
Fedora doesn’t update release ISOs, but this alternate release project does this. It would be interesting to see if the newer driver version in the respin ISO works correctly.

p.s. Disregard the comments about the iGPU, it has no bearing on this.

True, but his inxi output both times shows no driver loaded.

Also, his firmware is the latest shown on the Asus website so this could possibly (likely?) be related to lack of support for newer kernels on the mobo.

He also only shows the kernel 6.19.10 which was the release kernel for f44 and updates would install 6.19.14. Apparently he is only able to boot the live media at present.

@digitalman
Once booted to the live media you should be able to perform the installation in basic graphics mode. After the installation completes and you reboot then it should be possible to then enable the rpmfusion-nonfree repo as shown here and install the legacy 470xx driver with sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia-470xx

In case it wasn’t clear, I’m not actually trying to install. I already have F44 Cinnamon installed on this system. After the F44 update I had a problem that the Fedora drive seemed to disappear, so I tried to boot a Live ISO on USB to try and check which drives it saw and potentially chroot to fix something. This post is just about booting that Live ISO and getting a black screen. From my inxi, it should be using nouveau, right?

One of the ISOs I tried was F44 Cinnamon which should still support X11. However, since it’s using nouveau it should support Wayland as well. I also tried F44 Gnome and got the same black screen.

I checked the ASUS website and I am on the latest motherboard BIOS.

So the main point was that nouveau on the Live ISO doesn’t appear to work with this GPU. This is not about the 470 RPM Fusion drivers as those are not available on the Live ISO.

I haven’t tried a spin of a newer release after F44 yet, but I can do that.

I’m plugged into the Nvidia card. I don’t recall if the motherboard has a video connector for the iGPU, but I can check when I get home. I looked at the online manual and it says the motherboard should have HDMI, Displayport, DVI-D and VGA connectors.

Thanks.

The live media boot does not load the nouveau driver. That is available by default after the installation completes. This is why the basic graphics mode is required – it allows the gpu to be used in its simplest mode.

Very few mobos have that many connectors, though some might.

Oh, interesting. My inxi was taken while booted from the live media but in basic graphics mode. So the below doesn’t indicate it uses nouveau? I guess this was taken after it fully booted the live media, but before I would have installed.

Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 21.1.21 with: Xwayland v: 24.1.9 driver: X:
loaded: modesetting, nouveau alternate: fbdev,nv,vesa dri: swrast gpu: N/A
    display-ID: :0 screens: 1

Note that there is nothing following the driver: in that line. The value immediately following the : would be the driver used, and in this case it is nothing.
Similarly here with the N/A, meaning no applicable driver was loaded.

Try an older version like f40 or F42 and see if it an existing problem or if it is new bug to this installer. If you are just repairing something on the filesystem, it probably won’t matter. It also probably won’t matter if you use a ubuntu live boot either if you just want to get rolling and you are chroot’ing everything manually anyway. I have done both. well technically I rescued debian and gentoo systems with fedora live.

I believe this is incorrect.

It should load the nouveau driver, like this:

liveuser@localhost-live:~$ inxi -Gx
Graphics:
  Device-1: NVIDIA ... [GeForce ...] driver: nouveau v: kernel

Tested with F44-WORK-x86_64-LIVE-20260501.iso. @digitalman can you try the same respin ISO?

My old iMac needs firmware from Nvidia. Until I install the firmware, the journal has messages with:

Feb 19 07:50:07 kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: Direct firmware load for nouveau/nve7_fuc084 failed with error -2
Feb 19 07:50:07 kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: Direct firmware load for nouveau/nve7_fuc084d failed with error -2

(run errno 2 for explanation).

I see these messages in a Live USB session, but
I was able to install Fedora Workstation 43 from the Live USB. Some apps had problems until I installed the firmware.

https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/VideoAcceleration.html)) tells us how to get the firmware.

The nvidia firmware is also part of the default installation from the linux-firmware package and should already be installed unless the user has inadvertently removed the nvidia-gpu-firmware package.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the heads up.

I tested by booting the live media and it definitely did load the nouveau driver.

@yurislnx

I tried F44-WORK-x86_64-LIVE-20260501.iso and there was no difference, still a black screen with the live media.

I booted again in basic graphics mode and captured this:
