Three days ago, I installed the kernel 6.17.4 in Fedora 42 KDE Plasma via Discovery. Whenever I boot into the new kernel, it only outputs a black screen. When I connected my Laptop to my TV via HDMI, an input is recognized, but the TV also outputs the black screen. Strangely, in the kernel logs it doesn’t say kernel 6.17.4, but 6.16.12. The old kernel still works fine. My Laptop is Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5i Gen 10 14" (14IAH) and no, it doesn’t have a Nvidia GPU.
Post the output from inxi -Fzxx and sudo bootctl list.
You could also boot the failed kernel, switch to a spare TTY with Ctrl-Alt-F3, dump the kernel messages to a pastebin with journalctl --no-pager --no-hostname -k -b | fpaste and post the URL.

Well, you’re definitely still booting 6.16.12 - are you quite sure that you’re selecting the 6.17 kernel in grub?
I assume you’ve specifically booted the 6.16 kernel as it works ok with your i915 and that if you boot from 6.17 you still get the black screen.
If this is the case, boot 6.17, wait until you get to your black screen and all activity is stopped, then shutdown. Come back up on 6.16 and paste the results of journalctl --no-pager --no-hostname -k -b -1 | fpaste. Note that there is a -1 in that command to post the logs from the -1 (previous) boot that you just generated by starting the 6.17 kernel you have.
I don’t know why, but it always says 6.16.12, even though I was in 6.17.4
You’re definitely booting 6.16 in this output.
* Okt 25 18:36:28 kernel: Linux version 6.16.12-200.fc42.x86_64 (mockbuild@abcc44cb423344ae9f4fc0f0f68ab138) (gcc (GCC) 15.2.1 20250808 (Red Hat 15.2.1-1), GNU ld version 2.44-6.fc42) #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sun Oct 12 16:31:16 UTC 2025

Even tells you the parameters that grub passed to the kernel (this is why I wanted to see the bootctl output - to make sure that the 6.16 and 6.17 kernels were both fully built and that you weren’t simply falling back to the next bootable kernel because 6.17 is knackered on your machine)
So - in this fpaste output, did you get a blank screen to produce it or does it work ok?
So in the grub menu, I specifically choose 6.17.4, and however long I wait, it stays black. I don’t know why that happened, but it thinks that my last boot wasn’t the one a few minutes ago, but yesterday. When I use journalctl --list-boots, it doesn’t even show the boot into 6.17.4.
i915 GPU isn’t really happy and is failing to fire up the display pipeline. System will continue to boot though - you just won’t be able to see much!
i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* [CRTC:88:pipe A] DSB 0 poll error
i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] PHY A failed to request refclk after 1us.
You could try combinations of these kernel parameters to turn off the new power-saving features which are apparently causing some regressions on i915 chipsets according to some of the bug reports on freedesktop.org.
i915.force_probe=*, i915.disable_dsb=1 and i915.enable_dc=0
Could you maybe send the direct link? The link you send unfortunately only sends me to the homepage.
Any joy with this?
I’m also having the same problem on a Lenovo Laptop with an arrow lake mobile chip and integrated graphics.
6.16.x kernel works fine but 6.17.x does not, just goes to a black screen as you describe.
Also having the same black screen issue on 6.17.x, 6.16.x works fine
