Black screen after setting custom XINITRC to execute i3 and then wishing to switch back to GNOME

I recently was trying to load xf86-video-nv on my NVS 300(GT 218 based) GPU. After a while I kept getting stuck on a black screen and then decided that maybe using full GNOME on xf86-video-nv wouldnt be the best of ideas and therefore created a .xinitrc file on my home file and included exec i3 in it. After a while I still had the black screen issue.

Going back to nouveau allowed me to boot i3 but then after deleting the .xinitrc file and then running XINITRC=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc sudo /usr/libexec/Xorg netted me a black screen

These are the errors in my Xorg log:

Could GNOME have crashed/halted? How would I check that?
