Best Way to Set Up a Lua/Luau Scripting Environment on Fedora?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working with Lua/Luau scripting and have recently been trying to organize my workflow on Fedora Linux.

Most of the resources I’ve been working with are focused on Roblox scripting, including script editing, Lua examples, compatibility information, and troubleshooting. I’m also maintaining a scripting-resource website where I keep some of this information documented, so I’m trying to make sure the Linux side of my workflow is set up properly.

One of the references I’ve been using is the Lua scripting and Fluxus documentation, which also has information about Linux compatibility and different scripting workflows. However, I’m more interested in the Fedora development side rather than simply running a particular application.

At the moment, I’m trying to figure out the best approach for:

  • installing and managing Lua on Fedora

  • editing Lua/Luau files with proper syntax highlighting

  • testing regular Lua scripts locally

  • keeping scripts and documentation organized

  • identifying which tools are available directly through Fedora packages

  • avoiding a setup that depends on unnecessary third-party software

For people who regularly work with Lua on Fedora, would you recommend installing Lua directly through dnf, using a version manager, or setting up a separate development environment?

I’m particularly interested in the distinction between a basic Lua development setup and one intended for Luau, since the two aren’t always interchangeable.

If there are Fedora-specific packages, editors, extensions, or configuration steps that make Lua/Luau development easier, I’d appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks!
