Battery life consumption skyrockets after upgrading to Plasma 6.7

Hello all,

I am on Fedora 44 KDE, running Plasma 6.7, KDE Frameworks 6.27.0, Qt 6.11.1, kernel 7.0.12-201, using Wayland. I have an Intel Core Ultra 7 265H and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU on a Lenovo Thinkpad, and have the latest Mesa and NVIDIA drivers.

Before, under Plasma 6.6.5, my idle power usage was about 3-4 W, and browsing on a regular website (not social media or YouTube) with Vivaldi was about 6-7 W. I upgraded to Plasma 6.7, and now my idle power usage is 12-14 W, and writing this post was 14-16 W.

When I check System Monitor, Plasma Background Services uses about 2-5% of my CPU, with nearly all of that from kwin_wayland. (When I downgrade to Plasma 6.6.4 and check, with System Monitor and this browser open, the CPU usage is far smaller from kwin_wayland, around 0.1-0.3%.)

When I use sudo dnf downgrade plasma-desktop, my desktop is downgraded to 6.6.4 and my KDE apps to 25.12.3, and my battery life returns to normal. When I upgrade again, using the Terminal or Discover, the high battery consumption returns.

Not sure if this is a Fedora or KDE bug, but it’s a frustrating one, and since Plasma 6.7 is so new, I haven’t found anyone else reporting that they have this problem.

Thanks if any of you can help. If there’s any way I can gather more helpful info, let me know.

Here with Plasma 6.7 Background services use 0.3%, about the same as with the previous versions. Brave uses 0.9% with 4 tabs open and me writing this, when I stop writing it goes down to 0.3%.
I have an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H.
I can’t say something changed when I updated yesterday to a new Kinoite with Plasma 6.7.

Hello, I did not notice any change after upgrading to Plasma 6.7. Fedora 44 KDE, KDE Frameworks 6.27.0, Qt 6.11.1 kernel 7.0.12-201, using Wayland.

AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 w/ Radeon 890M, NVIDIA Corporation AD107M [GeForce RTX 4060 Max-Q / Mobile], nouveau driver

kwin_wayland, around 0.7 - 1 % CPU load when running Firefox.

Did you try change Power mode ?

All this was happening while on Power Saver mode, with 5% screen brightness, in both cases I tested (with Plasma 6.6.4 and Plasma 6.7). There’s no better power mode to change to when it comes to battery life.

I noticed you and JandeMus have AMD CPUs while mine is Intel, so I’m not sure if that makes a difference.

AMD here, 0.1% on average.

Hi, I’m facing a similar issue on my 2022 Legion Pro 5i with an i7-12700H and an RTX 3070 Mobile.

Looking at nvidia-smi showed a kwin_wayland process, which I guess means that Plasma for some reason is using the Nvidia dGPU.

I tried forcing it to use Intel iGPU using a custom Wayland session pointing to a wrapper script that set the KWIN_DRM_DEVICES environment variable:

export KWIN_DRM_DEVICES=/dev/dri/by-path/pci-0000:00:02.0-card

exec /usr/lib/plasma-dbus-run-session-if-needed /usr/bin/startplasma-wayland

This unfortunately resulted in the session just failing to launch and sending me back to the login screen.

I’m not sure whether CPU manufacturer matters. I’m using GDM.

Agreed, I believe the persistent kwin_wayland process running on the dGPU is what needs looking at, though unfortunately I don’t know where to start on that one.

Submitted a bug on KDE.org, I’ll update on the results: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=521833

I’m sorry I don’t know neither.

Found a couple other bugs at KDE.org that seem relevant: 521914 and 521937.

Something to note: 521914 has an AI-assist disclaimer, but also lists specific merge requests that cause the issue.

I suspect that it’s sddm causing issues and occupying my nvidia dGPU, due to the lack of any other processes (xwayland and so on) in nvidia-smi except kwin_wayland, so I tried to force the use of my intel iGPU by adding the line:

KWIN_DRM_DEVICES=/dev/dri/by-path/pci-0000\:00\:02.0-card

to the file /etc/sddm.conf.d/10-waylandgreeter.conf at the GreeterEnvironment line, so the file now looks like this:

[General]
DisplayServer=wayland
GreeterEnvironment=QT_WAYLAND_SHELL_INTEGRATION=layer-shell KWIN_DRM_DEVICES=/dev/dri/by-path/pci-0000\:00\:02.0-card

[Wayland]
CompositorCommand=kwin_wayland --drm --no-lockscreen --no-global-shortcuts --locale1 --inputmethod maliit-keyboard

Unfortunately, all this did was cause a core dump:

Jun 30 17:09:41 481J4Y systemd-coredump[1932]: Process 1830 (sddm-greeter-qt) of user 990 dumped core.

Can someone help? I’ll be stuck on a pre-6.7 snapshot until this is resolved.

EDIT: I did what OP did and downgraded to 6.6.4 after a full system upgrade, and the dGPU is able to power off again, no kwin_wayland process in sight.

Anything suspicious in powertop?

Steve

Went back to a 6.7 snapshot to check, but no, nothing strange there.

Found a discussion on KDE forums, and this seems to be a known bug for 6.7 with the GpuManager component, complete with a bug report.

A temporary workaround is to disable vulkan by setting the environment variable KWIN_DISABLE_VULKAN=1.

Exact instructions are in the linked KDE discussion thread.
