Ath10k QCA6174 Wireless connects to furthest AP

I’ve been through everything I can think of. Tried different firmwares, downgraded NetworkManager, wireless-tools, etc…Nothing works. I have another laptop with an Intel 802.11AC card that doesn’t have this issue. When the computer makes the connection initially it takes forever. Usually in the neighborhood of a minute after boot and login before wifi connects. Sometimes when it connects at first it will have a strong signal, then suddenly it drops like it switched to the furthest AP it could find. Network speeds are horrendous. I can force it to connect to the closest AP by putting the AP hardware address in the BSSID field in the wireless settings. If I leave it cleared so it can roam it will always connect to the furthest AP it can. Has anyone else had this issue? This is a new install, Fedora 30, on a Lenovo Yoga 720. No issues with wireless in Win10 prior to the switch.

It looks like wpa_supplicant is for no reason disconnecting from the nearest AP once it’s connected and reconnecting to the furthest one…This makes zero sense to me.

In your wpa_supplicant.conf file there should be entries for each of your networks that start with network={

Then wifi details and ends with }

Within each bracketed area might be a line that says priority=<some number between 1-4>

Not sure if low number or high take preference but if you have those lines that might be your issue. Change the numbers.

Geoff

All that is in my wpa_supplicant.conf is this:

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=wheel

Interestingly this problem exists in Fedora 30 Standard and Fedora 30 Plasma, but not in Ubuntu 19.04.

You can try to isolate the issue by comparing the package versions:

rpm -q kernel linux-firmware NetworkManager wpa_supplicant

Versioning seems to be different between Ubuntu and Fedora. Linux firmware in Fedora is 20190312-94 and in Ubuntu it’s 1.174. The firmware-6.bin file was different according to the md5sum, but swapping the Ubuntu firmware file to the Fedora system didn’t change anything.

Here it is side by side:
Fedora
linux-firmware-20190815-101
wpa_supplicant-2.8-2
wireless-tools-29-22
NetworkManager-1.16.4-1

Here’s Ubuntu 19.04 live
Ubuntu
linux-firmware 1.178
network-manager 1.16.0-0
wireless-tools 30-pre9-13
wpasupplicant 2:2.6-21

Even Rawhide has this issue. I can’t figure out what is causing this.

Ubuntu uses a different versioning scheme for linux-firmware than the official scheme Fedora follows. You can try gunzip /usr/share/doc/linux-firmware/changelog.gz | head on Ubuntu to see what the official version is.
