I found this twitter thread really interesting!
The input photos are amazing color photographs from the early 1900s. These were made by taking three exposures, each with a different color filter. At the time, there was no technology to make prints, but they could be viewed with a projector using the same filters and super-imposing the result.
The researcher took these (and other images):
and reduced them to black and white, and then had the AI re-color them, resulting in:
… believable but completely wrong results with a much different feel!
