[Article Proposal] Windows 10 to Fedora migration guide

Article Summary:
How to migrate from Windows 10 to Fedora Linux

Article Description:
A Step-by-Sep Guide how to migrate from an old Windows 10 to a fresh Fedora dualboot system.

Motivation:

Windows 10 security updates end on 14 October 2025, KDE’s 29th birthday and also, ironically, International E-Waste Day (you cannot make these things up!). Hundreds of millions of functioning devices will become e-waste. This means manufacturing and transporting new ones, which is perhaps the biggest waste of all: hardware production alone can account for over 75% of a device’s CO2 emissions over its lifespan.

Free Software is a solution, today, and if we work together Windows 10 could truly be the last version of Windows users ever use! In this talk I will present the issue of e-waste and the importance of right-to-repair software, and invite the audience to participate in coordinating a global, unified Free Software campaign over the next year to raise awareness about the environmental harm of software-driven hardware obsolescence, while promoting upgrading users from Windows 10 to GNU/Linux directly. Extending hardware’s operating life with Free Software is good for users, and better for the environment. Let’s think big and act boldly as a unified community!

I know there are many guides about the topic, but I think now is the best time for a new guide. There will be many people searching for a new OS and most guides out there recommend Ubuntu.

Proposed Article Pitch: Fedora as the Ideal Post-Windows 10 Solution

Thesis: With the end-of-life of Windows 10 approaching, many users are seeking stable and secure alternatives. Fedora, with its robust community, cutting-edge features, and commitment to open-source principles, presents an ideal solution.

Key Arguments:

  • Timeliness:

    • The impending Windows 10 EOL creates an immediate need for users to find a new operating system. Fedora’s reputation for stability and security makes it a compelling choice.
  • Unique Selling Points:

    • Community and Support: Highlight Fedora’s strong community, which provides excellent support and resources for users of all levels.
    • Cutting-Edge Features: Emphasize Fedora’s reputation for being at the forefront of technology, offering users the latest software and tools.
    • Customization: Discuss the high level of customization that Fedora allows, enabling users to tailor their system to their specific needs.
    • Stability and Security: Reinforce Fedora’s reputation for reliability and security, which is particularly important in the post-Windows 10 landscape.
  • Addressing Common Concerns:

    • Ease of Use: Address common concerns about the learning curve for new Linux users by highlighting the user-friendly nature of modern Fedora installations and the availability of helpful resources.
    • Software Availability: Assure readers that most popular software is available for Fedora, and provide examples of how to find and install specific applications.

This sounds like an interesting topic. I give it a +1

I’d prefer that Fedora Magazine did not spend time discussing any aspects of any non-free operating systems. Ideally, such systems wouldn’t even be named. If you can write the article as a generic “How to dual boot Fedora Linux with some other (potentially non-free) OS”, it might work. Can you write it in such a way?

I do not want to discuss any aspects of Windows. I just want to help the People to get rid of it. I see Windows more like a starting point, like all the Articles about Ashai Linux

+1. Card #350 has been created to track this article’s progress.

You should be able to sign in on Fedora Magazine and start writing your article. Let us know with a comment on the card when the article is ready for review or if you have any other questions.

Thanks!

My first draft is ready, and I would appreciate a review. (Pagure is currently down and returning 503 errors. That’s why I am posting it here.)
