[Article Proposal] Hardware Key Auth

Hi,

I’d like to write an article about my YubiKey authentication research results… the topics will cover:

  • How to use YubiKey with Fedora 34
  • Authentication options (online / offline)
  • Troubleshoots
  • Conclusions

What do you think? Is it worth to write an article about it?

Hello @drmckay,
Welcome to the Fedora Discussion area and the Fedora Magazine section in particular!
+1 for the proposal, I think it is well worth writing about. This is a current topic that is on some peoples minds as can be seen in the discussion area elsewhere.

It sounds interesting. I’m not really familiar with YubiKey. Will the software being covered/promoted be FOSS?

YubiKey’s are used currently by a number of Fedora users who I am sure will chime in eventually. From their website

Yubico was founded in Sweden 2007 with the mission to make secure login easy and available for everyone. In 2011, Stina, CEO & Founder, and Jakob, Chief Innovation Officer & Founder, moved to Silicon Valley to make the dream happen. In close collaboration with the leading internet companies and thought leaders we created native support for our security keys in the major online platforms and browsers, enabling a safer internet for billions of people.

Hi @glb,

Yes, it requires the pam_yubico package (Overview - rpms/pam_yubico - src.fedoraproject.org). The official sources are licensed under 2-clause BSD license , you can find the sources on GitHub (GitHub - Yubico/yubico-pam: Yubico Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM)).

OK. +1. Let me know here when you have signed into Kanban to initialize your profile and then I will create a card to track this article.

I’m already signed in (Kanban+WP… I have access to everything ). Thank you!

Strange. When I entered your email into Kanban, it didn’t find your account. Did you use the same email address when signing into Kanban as you have listed on your FAS account?

Yes, I use the same email. I received your invitation , but I can’t accept it. Nothing shown on the projects dashboard.

I just tried again and it seems to have worked this time. Thanks.

Now you should be able to write your article on Fedora Magazine and move your card to “Review” when you have your article ready for publication.

Thanks!

Done, waiting for review

Thanks Peter! We’ll assign it to someone for review, editing, and publication at tomorrow’s IRC meeting.

pam_u2f.so works too. That’s what I use with my brand new yubikey.

Sounds good. I didn’t find it on my way. Is it better than the yubico module?
