Article Proposal: Deep Dive into sosreport Data Pack Layout

Hi Fedora Magazine Editors,

I would like to propose a new article for Fedora Magazine.

Title: Deep Dive into sosreport: Understanding the Data Pack Layout in Fedora & RHEL
Author: Suraj Rajendra Patil
Fedora ID: suraj522
Email: (hidden to prevent spam) Use PM instead.
Draft Link: https://hackmd.io/@suraj522/ryOuMY4Nll

Summary:
This article explains the internal structure of the sosreport archive in Fedora/RHEL, focusing on its new Data Pack layout introduced in sos 4.x. It covers the significance of each folder like sos_commands, sos_logs, manifest.json, and how plugins drive the collection. The article is designed for sysadmins and support engineers to better understand what sosreport collects and how to utilize it effectively.

Please let me know if this fits Fedora Magazine’s guidelines and whether I should proceed with editing/publishing through the CMS or Pagure.

Thank you,
Suraj

Hello @rlengland,

I hope you’re doing well.

I’ve attached my draft article in my first reply, but I’m sharing it again here for your convenience:
:link: HackMD Draft - sos report data pack layout

This is my first time contributing to Fedora Magazine, so I’m not sure how to proceed with the WordPress review and publication process. Could you please guide me on:

  1. How to get access to the WordPress Fedora Magazine instance?
  2. What are the next steps to move this article into review and eventually get it published?

I’m excited to contribute and would really appreciate your support in completing the process.

Thanks & Regards,
Suraj Patil

Hello @rlengland,

Thank you for opening the Pagure ticket and guiding me through the process.

I’ve logged in to the WordPress dashboard at https://fedoramagazine.org/wp-admin/, but it seems I don’t yet have permission to create or submit new articles. The “Posts” section is missing or restricted, and I’m unable to find the option to add a new post.

Could you please help grant me the necessary access to submit my draft? I’m excited to share my article: “Deep Dive into sosreport: Understanding the Data Pack Layout in Fedora & RHEL.”

It could be that you not have enough rights yet. Please have a look to accounts.fedoraproject.org and check if you signed the Fedora Project Contributor Agreement.
I can also imagine that you have to be a member of Fedora Contributors.

But please as I mentioned, have patient. As soon as they discussed your ticket you will be informed. And it can be that it takes till monday that enough magazine-team members are online.

Take it easy but take it!

@suraj522 While on the Fedora magazine WordPress instance look at the top of the window where the WordPress logo appears along side “Fedora Magazine”. To the right you should see the “+ New” menu item. Select that and then select “Post”. That will open WP in the editor.

Hi @ilikelinux, @rlengland,

I hope you’re doing well! I tried accessing the Fedora Magazine WordPress dashboard at https://fedoramagazine.org/wp-admin/, but I received the message:

“Sorry, you are not allowed to access this page.”

I have a Fedora Account (FAS ID: suraj522), but I believe I don’t yet have the necessary permissions to create or submit a new article. I also do not see the “New” menu item in the dashboard.

I’ve completed my article draft on HackMD

Kindly let me know how to proceed or if I can be granted WordPress access to submit the draft for review.

Thank you so much for your support!

@suraj522
You appear on the WP Fedora Magazine instance as a “contributor” with your name, nick name, email address, etc. As a “contributor” you should have the access you require. In fact, since that information appears it looks like you HAVE successfully accessed WP using your FAS account.

Can you try to clear the cache in your browser to see if that will allow you to open the page? Or perhaps attempt using another browser?

Hi @rlengland,
Yes, after clearing the cache, I’m now able to see the option. I’ve pasted my article content, though I realize it’s not fully aligned with Fedora Magazine’s WordPress formatting and style guidelines — I’m sorry for that. :folded_hands:

I’m not very familiar with how to apply the correct block styling (like headings, code blocks, and image placement), so I’ve just pasted my content in markdown-style for now.
Hopefully, someone from the editorial team can help align it properly.

Thank you again for your guidance!
Suraj

@suraj522 Don’t forget to save and exit the page so we can review/edit your article. You are shown as still editing.

@rlengland Done can you check

@suraj522 I would like to compare your WP version of the article with the HACKMD version but I apparently do no have access to it at:
https://hackmd.io/@suraj522/ryOuMY4Nll
I am not a user at HackMD but have signed it. Is there some permissions that are needed to access this?

Hello @rlengland, I think I didn’t restrict the HackMD link. Could you please try accessing it again?

@rlengland
I’ve made it publicly accessible now. Could you please have a look? 🛠️ Deep Dive into sosreport: Understanding the Data Pack Layout in Fedora & RHEL - HackMD

I am able to see it now. Thank you.
