Tried to listen to some edu videos on Youtube via Firefox - up to data Asahi Fedora remix - able to pair the Airpods and they hurray for the first few seconds, then it starts breaking up, or the audio comes and goes 1second silent, 1 second audio, or in many cases after 60 seconds or so of trying then goes silent. Is there any settings I need to adjust here? Works fine from nearby iPhone
I have a M2 Air and M1 Mini, using Sony WF-1000XM4 and WH-1000XM5 headphones. Both have some breaking up initially. Eventually both work.
Bluetooth on Intel 12th and 13th Gen works perfectly on the same Sony headphones above.
I can’t speak for AirPods. The closest thing I owned was Beats Studio Buds which I sold for the WF-1000XM4.
Do you have a pair of non-Apple and non-Beats bluetooth headphones, such as Sony, Bose, Sennheiser, Skullcandy, or even some crappy AliExpress/Amazon earbuds. Does that work better?
Will try and borrow an alternate pair of bluetooth headphones and retest (also now changed to kernel 16k). I’m okay with breaking up initially if it resumes to stable soon enough, but it wasn’t happening in my limited testing - at least not within the first minute of testing. Thanks
Bluetooth/WiFi coexistence doesn’t work properly yet. If you’re on a 2.4GHz WiFi network, try switching to 5GHz if you can. You can also try changing the Bluetooth codec settings in pavucontrol.
Ah, that’s probably the reason. Why my Sony headphones work is because I also have 5GHz Wi-Fi.
I remember my roadtrip, when I tethered my M2 Air to my OnePlus 11, I had to set the hotspot to 5GHz so it doesn’t automatically set up a 2.4GHz hotspot and let me use Bluetooth.
Using 5GHZ is better. But it still breaks up regularly (more than a few times a minute). Could this be due to 2.4ghz scanning? I recall on Ubuntu on a HP laptop geoclued would scan a lot to infer geo locations and some WIFI chips couldn’t handle this whilst maintaining stable connections. Is there any kernel boot flags to disable 2.4 altogether?
Turning off wifi source in geoclue and restarting, is much improved. No breaks up for the last 3 minutes.
/etc/geoclue/geoclue.conf - set to false under wifi and reboot

Most 5GHz Wi-Fi connections (e.g., 802.11ac) still start with 2.4GHz - I believe the beacon, probe, and authentication (negotiation), and first few authentication Wi-Fi frames fall into this category before switching to the 5GHz spectrum. So, you’ll probably want to avoid connecting to different Wi-Fi networks while listening to Bluetooth, as well as connect to Wi-Fi before connecting Bluetooth.
Nah, they are completely separate channels. If a network is on a 5G channel only, it is on 5G only, there is zero activity on the 2.4GHz band. Beacons, probes, auth, etc. will all be on 5G.
Dual-band networks, of course, will be on both, and then it’s up to the client to pick one and there is no way to guarantee you’ll use 5G exclusively (and the client may roam between them at will). So if you can, you’ll want to configure your access point with a dedicated SSID for 5G so you can select it and force everything onto that band.
