Adding logged in user to a new group is NOT considered after logout and login at graphical user screen

Hi all,

on my maschine (Fedora 42, KDE desktop) I just added my own user to a group ‘sudo usermod -a -G blabla me’.
A cat /etc/group showed that entry.
I know that getting this group assigned I have to login once again. Therefor I logged out from my desktop session and logged in on the graphical login screen. BUT: Calling the command ‘id’ on the console showd me that this new group is still not assigned to me.
Than I did a complete reboot and after logging in I got the new group.

Now my question: Why was a logout and login on the grphical login screen not enough to get a new user session? Which component still cached the old group assignments?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards
McA

How long time did you wait after you logged out before you entered your password and logged in? If the session has not completely terminated, it will just reuse that session when you log in again.

Just logged out to see the graphical login screen and logged in again.

Just tested it with waiting for some time to log in again. It really seems to be a timing issue. But this is definitely nothing a user would expect.
