I have a small use case here but I’m stuck.
I’ve copied my keepass key to an android device which is available as mtp:/Fairphone 6/ in dolphin. How would I access that in the keepassxc Select key file dialog? Do I need additional mtp mount software?

wait, why is it mounting as mtp, cant it mount as usb mass storage instead?
when connected to the pc, it should show up how is being connected and allow you to select just charge, camera mode or pictures only mode, mtp and usb mass storage device, only very old android phones didnt had the last one, android 6 and before
if it doenst have usb mode and only mtp(cant remember where or how it mounts), you can also send the file by mail to yourself, or via whatsapp and use whatsapp web in the pc, zip it in the smartphone before sending it with a password, there is also a wifi ftp service for local wifi networks to copy the file from a web browser
Android devices usually mounts as mtp when connected via USB. They can also be mounted as a gphoto2, but that usually require to enable a secret developer option, at least I needed to do that on my device.
keepasxc should use the key file stored on our local disk. Then there is the android package Keepass2Android which can sync its key file from your local system via scp.
I got an official answer from KeepassXC stating that using a key file is just an (reluctantly) carry over from keepass and might go. Better use a hardware token FIDO thingy or something.
if the smartphone must mount and act as a security key, it does sound better to have a dedicated security key, for sure
i understood you needed to copy a generated certificated, a copy, but this is very different, so a separated solution is way better and more secure
I don’t understand what you mean with “separate solution”. Using a phone would be a separate solution all by and in itself. It would be a second factor: password and phone needed to gain access to sensitive data
