2025-09-01 @ 16:00 UTC - Fedora 43 Blocker Review Meeting

Hi folks! It’s time for a Fedora 43 blocker review meeting! We have 1 proposed blocker and 7 proposed freeze exceptions for Beta, and 5 proposed blockers for Final.

Here is a handy link which should show you the meeting time in your local time.

The meeting will be on Matrix. Click the link above to join in a web client - you can authenticate with your FAS account - or use a dedicated client of your choosing.

If you have time today, you can take a look at the proposed or accepted blockers before the meeting - the full lists can be found here.

Remember, you can also now vote on bugs outside of review meetings! If you look at the bug list in the blockerbugs app, you’ll see links labeled “Vote!” next to all proposed blockers and freeze exceptions. Those links take you to tickets where you can vote. Overview - fedora-qa/blocker-review - Pagure.io has instructions on how exactly you do it. We usually go through the tickets shortly before the meeting and apply any clear votes, so the meeting will just cover bugs where there wasn’t a clear outcome in the ticket voting yet. THIS MEANS IF YOU VOTE NOW, THE MEETING WILL BE SHORTER!

We’ll be evaluating these bugs to see if they violate any of the Release Criteria and warrant the blocking of a release if they’re not fixed. Information on the release criteria for F43 can be found on the wiki.

For more information about the Blocker and Freeze exception process,

And for those of you who are curious how a Blocker Review Meeting works - or how it’s supposed to go and you want to run one - check out the SOP on the wiki.

Have a good weekend and see you on Monday!

Meeting log

Here is an AI-generated summary of a Blocker review meeting from 2025-09-01.
Please be aware that the summary is intended for a quick convenient recapitulation of the meeting, but might contain factual errors. Read the full meeting log for all the details.

Proposed Beta freeze exceptions

(2391935) FE: Exiv2 v0.28.6

An update to Exiv2 was proposed to address some low-importance CVEs. However, Adam Williamson expressed concern, noting that a previous attempt to update this package was badly broken and he felt it might be safer to handle this as a zero-day update. Following his reasoning, Brandon Nielsen, Lukáš Růžička, and Christopher Boni changed their votes to be against the freeze exception, resulting in a split vote.

Resolution: Punted. The decision was delayed to allow for further voting on the ticket due to the split vote.

(2391291) Switching on magnifier keeps crashing Gnome Shell

Enabling the magnifier accessibility feature in GNOME Shell causes recurring crashes. This issue was already accepted as a Final blocker, but Adam Williamson proposed it as a Beta freeze exception as well to ensure a better user experience on the live image and on first boot. The proposal received unanimous support from attendees.

Resolution: Accepted as a Beta Freeze Exception. The fix should be included in the Beta release to prevent crashes when using this accessibility feature on the live image or before the first system update.

(2383756) Outdated Package - Still on 48.alpha

The gnome-extensions-app package is still at version 48.alpha in Fedora 43. The discussion clarified that while this package’s source is part of gnome-shell, it could theoretically be updated independently of the larger GNOME 49 Beta update issues. However, the group questioned the practical benefit of an update if it only addresses the version number. The proposer, Christopher Boni, agreed to withdraw the proposal until the broader GNOME 49 update situation is resolved.

Resolution: Withdrawn. The proposer agreed to withdraw the freeze exception request for now.

(2390023) SELinux blocks GDM from GNOME 49 Beta

This proposal is effectively a freeze exception request for the entire GNOME 49 Beta/RC update, which is currently blocked by an SELinux issue. Neal Gompa stated he would rather not ship an alpha version of GNOME for the Fedora 43 Beta. A potential workaround was discussed, but it was noted there might be multiple bugs at play. The group agreed to the freeze exception in principle but with a strict timeline.

Resolution: Accepted as a Beta Freeze Exception. The update to GNOME 49 Beta or RC is approved on the condition that the blocking issues are resolved and the update is available for testing within the next four or five days. If the timeline slips, the team may need to consult FESCo about a release delay or ship with GNOME 49 Alpha.

Proposed Final blockers

(2391242) Firefox slows down significantly when private mode invoked

A significant slowdown in Firefox was reported, initially believed to be connected to using private windows. The reporter, Lukáš Růžička, noted he could not reproduce it with a clean user profile. Adam Williamson confirmed experiencing a similar issue but believes the private mode connection is a red herring, suggesting it might be triggered by specific web content like Google Meet. Since the exact cause and reproduction steps are unclear, the group agreed to postpone a decision.

Resolution: Punted. The decision is delayed pending further investigation to determine the specific cause of the slowdown.

(2381599) After upgrading gnome-shell… layout indicator stopped reacting to layout switches by Ctrl-Shift key combination.

The layout indicator in gnome-shell no longer responds when using the Ctrl-Shift key combination to switch keyboard layouts. The discussion revealed that this key combination is not a default setting; it must be enabled via a hidden gsetting or the Tweak Tool, and the standard layout switching shortcuts still work correctly. While this means it doesn’t qualify as a release blocker, participants agreed it’s an annoying bug for users who rely on this setting.

Resolution: Rejected as a Final blocker, but accepted as a Beta Freeze Exception. This allows the fix to be included in the Beta release for the benefit of users who use this non-default configuration.

Accepted Beta blockers

  • (2388785) anaconda-webui: Progress is pending a fix from the anaconda-webui development team.
  • (2389105) blivet-gui: A fix is awaiting development team action, as the pull request is still open.
  • (2389102) kde-settings: This is waiting on a straightforward update. Neal Gompa acknowledged he had forgotten about it and will handle it after the meeting.
  • (2354865) libdnf: A fix is pending a new release of dnf/libdnf. The development team has been asked to expedite this.
  • (2390900) mutter: Adam Williamson will test a new potential upstream fix soon.
  • (2388442) NetworkManager-openvpn: This issue has been fixed in a stable version of the package and will be closed.

Open floor

  • User supakeen inquired about the status of OpenQA tests for the ARM Minimal image. Adam Williamson confirmed that the underlying issue is resolved and the fix has been pushed to the stable repositories.
  • Neal Gompa asked about getting a freeze exception for a pull request to the comps repository. Adam explained that comps changes do not follow the blocker bug process but may require an infrastructure freeze break. Adam subsequently merged the pull request.

    3. AGREED: 2390023 - AcceptedFreezeException (Beta) - we accept in principle that it would be good to update to 49 Beta or 49 RC if the selinux logjam can be resolved or worked around soon and the update available for testing within the next four or five days. beyond that point we would find it risky to try and land a major update and still hit the current planned release date, and may need to refer to FESCo for a release delay, or stick with 49 Alpha (@adamwill:fedora.im, 16:48:56)
